MONICA MCFADDEN NAMED SCHOLARSHIP SEMIFINALIST

Monica McFadden, a senior at Gonzaga Prep, was named a 1997 National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalist.

McFadden, daughter of Vincent and Miriam McFadden, is one of 15,000 students named from among more than 1.1 million high school students who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

She can now compete to be one of 7,000 Merit Scholarship winners. Eight other Gonzaga Prep students are National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Students: Matthew Daley, son of Michael and Ruth Daley; Bryan King, son of James and Mary Anne King; Darren Meekin, son of Arne and Janet Meekin; Tom Pearson, son of Jim and Anne Pearson; Stephen Schreiner, son of John and Jan Schreiner; Aaron Troy, son of Eugene and Kathleen Troy; Julie Weiskopf, daughter of Robert and Roberta Weiskopf; and Bryan Zeck, son of William and Una Zeck. Claude K. Irwin, a longtime Pullman attorney who now lives in Spokane, received Washington State University's Alumni Achievement Award. Irwin served as interim director and president of the WSU Alumni Association in 1951-52. For the past five years, he has been researching and writing a history of the alumni group, which will celebrate its centennial in 1998. He has also been president of the Pullman Cougar Club, Pullman Chamber of Commerce and the Pullman Lions Club. He is a WSU President's Associate. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class John Perez, a 1993 graduate of North Central, was promoted to his present rank while serving with Sea Control Squadron 38, Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego. He joined the Navy in 1993. Britni Koprivica and Kelly Zimmer, both members of Spokane's Dance Center, participated in the performance awards of the American Academy of Ballet in New York City. They were among 43 ballet students across America to be invited. Both qualified for participation by receiving Gold with Distinction medals in a local adjudication. Koprivica is a student at Horizon Junior High School, and Zimmer attends Ferris High School. The two dancers were was also invited to attend a five-week ballet school next summer at Vassar College.
