Football: Wenger: You won't stop us with boring tactics

NEIL MARTIN

ARSENE Wenger has blasted a clear warning to his Premiership and European rivals by insisting: You won't stop us by being boring. The Arsenal boss was reacting to criticism after his swashbuckling side were held to two successive Champions League draws by Ajax. But Wenger refuses to accept that the Dutch side have exposed the Gunners and has told opponents that packing the defence will not work. In fact, the Frenchman is supremely confident that the North Londoners will still qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals and says they could have the Premiership title wrapped up within six weeks. "What Ajax did is not a big secret," said Wenger. "It can work in one game, but not for a season."It's a very simple tactic. They just left one player up front and defended man to man all over the field. "But if we had scored one goal then they would have had to change completely and we were very close to making that breakthrough. "I really don't think that you can just decide to shut up shop against us. One day we will be very sharp and score three or four times. "I'm not disappointed by our position in the Champions League, although I would prefer to have 12 points and already be qualified like Manchester United. "But I don't have a worry about our position in Europe and I think we will qualify from our group. "And in the Premiership we have 10 matches to go, but if we keep doing well then it might be finished in less than nine. "Manchester United have 55points and can only get 30 more, so we know that if we reach 85 points we will definitely win the title. We have a better goal difference and that is worth an extra point to us. "What we know is that our home form will be the key factor. If we do well at home then we will win the title. "The whole squad knows that we are strong at Highbury and we want to keep that going." Wenger's first home examination in the title run-in comes against Charlton today - the team that shocked the country with a sensational 4-2 win at Highbury last season. Manager Alan Curbishley has pushed his side to the fringes of the European qualification places thanks to five successive Premiership victories and Arsenal can expect another tough test. "Charlton will be a good chance to show how much of a step forward we have taken from last season," added Wenger. "Alan Curbishley has done a brilliantjob. He is tactically very good, brings good motivation and is also a thinking man."
