Shawnee County sheriff's deputies arrested two men on suspicion of manufacturing methamphetamine Friday evening after a 90-minute standoff at 4033 N.W. Button Road.

No shots were fired.

Sheriff's Capt. Rick Hladky said the department received a call at about 4:30 p.m. Friday about a suspicious car parked in the driveway of an unoccupied residence on Button Road. A deputy responded and saw two white males standing in the yard when he arrived.

The deputy, Thad Winkelman, smelled ether when he got out of his patrol car and managed to take one of the men into custody as the other fled into the house, Hladky said.

Ether is one of the ingredients used to make methamphetamine.

Aware that a Jackson County deputy had been shot at a standoff situation in that county earlier Friday, Winkelman didn't attempt to enter the house alone. The department sent back-up to the scene, including members of its SWAT team that had been in Jackson County and a Kansas Highway Patrol K-9 unit.

Hladky said deputies tried to talk with the second suspect but received no response. Eight members of the SWAT team and the Highway Patrol K-9 unit then went into the house, found the man and brought him out. Deputies also found a large amount of chemicals in the house.

Hladky said the dog actually found the man, who was hiding in a crawl space, and bit him. The dog exited the crawl space and officers told the man that if he didn't come out they would send the dog back in.

The man came out and was taken into custody at about 6 p.m., Hladky said.

The sheriff's department Friday evening wasn't releasing the names of the men arrested. Both were taken to a Topeka hospital to make sure they were OK before being interviewed at the Law Enforcement Center. Hladky said a hospital checkup was routine procedure for suspects arrested in the vicinity of dangerous chemicals.

Deputies secured the area Friday night. Hladky said a Kansas Bureau of Investigation lab team would clean up the house this morning.
