Shawnee County public works director Mike Sease said Thursday the unusually warm weather was making it unusually difficult to control the dust on rock roads in the county.
Shawnee County commissioners on Thursday authorized Sease to spend $12,000 on a calcium chloride treatment for Carlson Road between K-4 highway and S.W. 33rd.
Although dust is a problem for many county roads, Shawnee County agreed to chip and seal that portion of Carlson Road in 1998 if Wabaunsee County would replace the bridge over Mission Creek. Sease said weather in early summer prevented his staff from completing the job.
"Since this rock was placed on the road, we have had only one small rain, which has created extremely dusty conditions," Sease said.
In addition to controlling the dust this winter, Sease said the calcium chloride will provide a solid base to prepare the road for a chip and seal. The road will be treated on Tuesday.
