32 RAPES?

A FORMER gynaecologist is thought to have been Britain's worst serial rapist.

Disgraced Rodney Ledward, who died of cancer in October 2000, is accused of raping 32 women patients and indecently assaulting another 10.

But it is feared he actually raped or assaulted more than 400 women - most of whom have stayed silent about their ordeal. The 42 women's joint claim for damages - to be heard in the High Court in January - could win them hundreds of thousands of pounds compensation from the NHS. Ledward practised at four hospitals in Kent before being struck off for botching operations on up to 200 women.

Solicitor Jane Loveday, who is handling the assault claims, said: "We estimate they represent only around 10 per cent of the true number."
