Topeka High and Leavenworth battled through four sudden-death overtimes Thursday afternoon before High's Brian Martin punched in the Trojans' fourth straight penalty kick for a 2-1 shootout win and the Class 6A regional soccer championship.
The Trojans played a game coach Joe Waldron said was "mediocre" but still found a way to fight off the Pioneers.
"We played well enough to win and go to our sixth straight state tournament," Waldron said.
The Trojans outshot Leavenworth 27-16 and took nine corner shots to Leavenworth's three. Still, the score remained tied at the end of regulation and also at the end of two ten-minute and two five-minute sudden-death overtimes.
Both teams were scoreless at the end of the first half. The Trojans' first and only score in regulation came in the second half from midfielder Aaron Franklin, who scored on a pass from midfielder KeiShawn Nave.
With 15 minutes remaining in the game, John Nauss tied the score for the Pioneers.
The final outcome was determined by the play of High goalie Jake Owen, who blocked two of Leavenworth's five penalty shots. High made four of its five penalty shots. The first shot, taken by Andrew Franklin, was stopped by Leavenworth's goalie, but the next three shots by Bryan Briggs, Ryan Kinder and Josue Castillo went cleanly into the net. The final penalty goal by Martin made High a winner.
"We were probably here to be beaten today, but the other team just couldn't do it," Waldron said. "We played a sloppy game both defensively and offensively."
"It would have been a good upset for Leavenworth. They upset Salina to get here," he said.
The Pioneers finished the season 6-11-1.
Topeka High (15-4) will host the No. 4 seed from Kansas City on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round.
