JACOB SCHANZENBACH WINS NATIONAL AWARD FOR PROJECT

Compiled by Maisy Fernandez

Jacob Schanzenbach, a Liberty High School student in Spangle, was cited as one of two top youth volunteers in the state in the Prudential Insurance Company of America's Spirit of Community program. He is one of 104 young people to receive the award.

One middle and one high school student in each state were named from more than 6,000 youths nominated at their local schools.

Schanzenbach was recognized for designing and implementing a new address system for his entire hometown of Rosalia. After working with the volunteer fire and ambulance corps, he determined that the city's address system made it difficult for emergency services crews to quickly locate homes.

He developed a new address scheme, which the City Council adopted, making for faster emergency-response time.

Schanzenbach will receive a silver medallion, a $1,000 cash prize and attend a four-day recognition event in Washington, D.C.

Nancy Hite, a 124th Regional Support Command readiness volunteer for the Army Reserve, received a guardian angel pin for her outstanding contributions to family programs. She is a resident of Newman Lake.

Tom Bennett, Wellpinit, Wash., has been on a roll since 1996 began: In January, he received an Excellence in Education award and letter of congratulations from Washington Water Power. In February, he was selected to participate in this summer's National Science Foundation Institute.

In March, Bennett wrote a grant proposal to HewlettPackard that resulted in $7,500 worth of calculators and computer equipment for the Wellpinit School District.

And, in April, he earned a 3.9 grade-point average for a class he took at Eastern Washington University's Spokane Center.

No word yet on how the month of May is faring.
