WOMEN OF DISTINCTION AWARDS GIVEN AT CONFERENCE

Four Spokane Falls Community College women received Women of Distinction awards at the Women's Leadership Conference sponsored by the Associated Women's Students.

Patt Earley, named Woman of the Year, is director of the Spokane County Head Start and Early Childhood Education Associated Program. She was recognized for helping expand Head Start services from one to 10 sites and ECEAP to 15 sites over the last eight years.

Other Women of Distinction Awards were presented to: Terry Engleman, program director of Cooperative Education, as SFCC Faculty of the Year; Carrie Reynolds-LeBlanc, president of Associated Women Students and the Single Parent Club, as Student Leader of the Year; and Carolyn Morrison, director of Alternatives to Domestic Violence, received the Community Service Award.

The University of Idaho College of Agriculture has recognized two Pullman students for academic and leadership activities:

Melynda Anderson, a freshman consumer affairs major and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jon Anderson, received the Phi Upsilon Omicron Outstanding Family and Consumer Science Freshman; and Neal Burke, a master's degree candidate in micro and molecular biology and son of Caryl Poshusta, received the Graduate Student Teaching Award.

Steve McDaniel, a University High School student, was the only Inland Northwest student to qualify on an individual basis for state finals in the Washington State Mathematics Council's High School Mathematics Contest.

Chase Middle School's Science Olympiad Team took home the following medals at the Washington State Science Olympiad:

In the Science of Fitness category, Lisa Clifton and Molly Burns took first place. Second-place winners in the Experimental Design event were Jamaila Cohen-Michaelson, Dustin DeVleming and Crystal Mazarowski. In the Wheeled Vehicle event, Ashley Roberts took second place. Josi Streich won third place in the Tower event.

Two Eastern Washington University students from the Inland Northwest have received $1,500 academic merit scholarships:

Michele Miller, Curlew, Wash., is a sophomore majoring in secondary education and mathematics. She is the daughter of Jeanine and Brad Miller and a 1994 graduate of Curlew High School.

Jessica Lane McLaughlin, Chewelah, Wash., is a junior theater major. She is the daughter of Janet and Donald McLaughlin.

A Lewis and Clark High School string quartet won the Washington State University's School of Music and Theatre Arts' music workshop and competition for middle and high school students from Wenatchee, Spokane and Pullman.

LC's top-prize winners were: Shayna Silverstein, first violin; Katherine Winner, second violin; Greg Johnson, viola; and Sarah Jenkins, cello.
