Adams admits 'rackets'

GERRY Adams has compared Provo member- ship to that of a... badminton club.

The Sinn Fein president made the shock claim when insisting that Sinn Fein and the IRA were two separate organisations.

Adams said: "There may be people in Sinn Fein who are members of the IRA, the same as they are members of the GAA or badminton club or rugby club."

Adams, who has denied he has ever been a member of the IRA, made the remarks while on the Dail campaign trail in May with Sinn Fein TD Martin Ferris.

Adams told a fly-on-the-wall documentary-maker: "At the risk of trotting out the usual line, or appearing almost to be propagandistic, Sinn Fein is not the IRA, whatever people may think.

"There are people in Sinn Fein who are former IRA people and make no secret of it and there may be people in Sinn Fein who are members of the IRA, the same as they are members of the GAA or badminton club or the rugby club."

But DUP MLA Ian Paisley Jr stormed: "There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a member of your local sports club, while there is, of course, everything wrong with being a member of the IRA."
