Silver and bronze give Scot full set of medals
Elizabeth HarrisALISON Sheppard added to her medal haul at the World Cup meeting in Paris yesterday after collecting a silver and bronze to join Friday's gold.
The Canadian-based Scot finished second in the 50 metres breast stroke, behind fellow Briton Zoe Baker, 30, who led throughout to finish in 30.66 seconds. Sheppard then went on to take third place in the 100m medley, which was won by Slovakian Martina Moravcova.
There were also victories for Sarah Price, who added the 100m backstroke title to Friday night's 200m win, and world record-holder Mark Foster in the 50m freestyle.
James Hickman narrowly failed to complete a butterfly double when he was squeezed into second by Russia's Igor Martchenko in the 100m, but Hickman triumphed in the 200m medley. There was also a second place for 16-year-old Joanne Jackson of Yorkshire in the 400m freestyle.
In the day's main event Australian superstar Ian Thorpe beat great rival Pieter van den Hoogenband in the 200m freestyle.
Thorpe, the world champion and world record holder, was nearly a second-and-a-half clear of his rival with a time of one minute 41.86 seconds.
It was the first time the two had met since the 2001 world championships in Japan, which saw Thorpe break his rival's world record en route to gold. And it was the perfect riposte from the 20- year-old Australian who had been soundly beaten by the Dutchman in Friday's final of the 100 metres freestyle.
Earlier yesterday, Thorpe had failed to qualify for the final of the 50 metres freestyle. But his response was devastating.
The time was some way outside his short-course world record of 1:41.10 but was still far too quick for Van Den Hoogenband. The gulf in class between the two and the rest of the field was made even more clear by the fact that Kvetoslav Svoboda of the Czech Republic claimed third nearly two seconds further back, in 1:44.96.
