ERIN JOHNSON RECEIVES TRUSTEES SCHOLARSHIP

Erin Johnson, a senior at Riverside High School, has received a $30,000 Trustees Scholarship from Seattle University, where he will attend next fall.

The scholarship is given for outstanding achievement in academic and activities.

Johnson, son of Howard and Kay Johnson, Chattaroy, maintains a 3.7 grade point average and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students and played varsity football, basketball and baseball.

Last year he represented Eastern Washington at the World Leadership (HOBY) Conference in Tempe, Ariz.

Three Inland Northwest residents were selected for top awards by the Washington National Guard:

Master Sgt. James R. Huber, Cheney, was named Senior Air Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year; Senior Airman Eric C. Kelsey, Lind, as Airmen of the Year; and Specialist Daniel P. Quinn, Spokane, as Traditional Soldier of the Year.

Grace Lee has received a John K. Branner Fellowship from the University of California-Berkeley's department of architecture for her distinquished academic record.

Lee is a 1987 graduate of St. George's School and a 1991 graduate of Stanford University. She is the daughter of Hi and Sun Lee, Spokane.

The Lewis and Clark High School Drill Team took home top honors by winning first place in the recent Washington Inter-Scholastic Activities Association's Dance and Drill Team State Competition in Lacey, Wash.

Two Eastern Washington University students from Spokane have each received a $1,500 Black Education Program scholarship: Luther M. Riley IV, a 1992 graduate of Ferris High School, is a sociology major. He is the son of Barbara Riley, Spokane.

Sean A. Merritt, a 1995 graduate of North Central High School, is a business major. He is the son of Sherry Merritt.

Jean Agte, a teacher at North Pines Junior High School is Eastern Washington University's Teacher of the Month for March.

She was nominated by Angel Wilson, who wrote that Agte makes learning fun and interesting and is always available to talk to students about school or personal matters.

"Actually, I think she should be Teacher of the Century," Wilson wrote.

Agte teaches prealgebra, social studies and life skills.

Alice Fairbanks, an artist from Colton, Wash., received honorable mention for her work entered in the Lewis-Clark Juried Art Exhibit in Lewiston.

Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Michael S. Gardiner received the Coast Guard Achievement Medal. Gardiner is a 1979 graduate of Selkirk High School in Ione, Wash., and a 1983 graduate of Eastern Washington University. He joined the Coast Guard in 1984.

Air Force Senior Airman Carrie A. Hebert has been recognized as both Airman of the Year and Personnel Manager of the Year at Altus Air Force Base, Olka., where she is stationed.

Herbert is the daughter of Judy Lymon, Otis Orchards, and James Maxlon, Spokane; she is a 1987 graduate of Mead High School.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Tammy M. Robel has received the Air Force Achievement Medal. Robel, an information management supervisor at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, is a 1987 graduate of Cheney High School.

She is the daughter of Robert Robel, Medical Lake, and Lynn Sturm, Spokane.
