Hail and farewell
ALEXANDER WALKERTaxi 2
WHAT street-smart cred Taxi 1 had in its breezy alliance of a speed-mad Marseille cab driver and a rookie cop with no licence to drive, has been abandoned in an expensively mounted but machine-made sequel that turns the cab into a customised James Bond supercar that can fly.
After a laboured opening gag about a woman going into labour in the breakneck dash to the hospital, humanity is lost in the pileup of high-tech gadgetry. It's also plot-heavy with producer-
writer Luc Besson's off-the-peg formula about Ninja terrorists kidnapping a Japanese VIP who's rescued by our heroes with a car- drop by parachute over Paris and multiple road crashes. Looks like France decided to hijack The Italian Job. An efficient vehicle for mechanical chauvinism, but not one I'd hail.
