England battle to keep Warne at bay
DAVID LLOYDMICHAEL ATHERTON led England away from an early disaster at Edgbaston today - but then the old nemesis Shane Warne struck again.
Marcus Trescothick was out to Jason Gillespie's first ball, making the score two for one, before Atherton and recalled Surrey batsman Mark Butcher flayed the Aussies in a 104-run partnership.
But it was too good to last and the introduction of Warne just before lunch brought the breakthrough.
Butcher, on 38, prodded forward to Warne's second delivery and the ball took pad and then bat before being caught by Ricky Ponting at silly point to make the total 106 for two.
Atherton and Hussain stayed together for almost half an hour after lunch, taking the score to 123, but then the impressive Gillespie struck again as Mark Waugh held a super, one-handed catch at second slip to remove Atherton for an excellent 57.
