C'mon, join the EWGS in the fun
Beverly Smith Vorpahl The Spokesman-ReviewMany "closet" genealogists live among us. You know who you are; you say you don't do genealogy, but you regularly read Heritage Hunting (thanks). Or you are truly interested in looking up your heritage but haven't yet made yourself known.
There are hundreds of us who are hoping you will soon give in to the urge. You don't know what you're missing by not opening that closet door. It's a friendly world out here. Some of the nicest people are genealogists, and they welcome beginners to America's hottest hobby. Every Tuesday and Thursday, members of the EWGS volunteer at the Downtown Branch of the Spokane Public Library just to help beginners get started.
Now is the perfect time to test the genealogy waters to see if you might really enjoy finding your ancestors. The Eastern Washington Genealogical Society will host its annual October Workshop Oct. 6 , which will offer an array of classes to help you start. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at in the Student Union Building at Spokane Falls Community College. Coffee and doughnuts will be served to give you a jump-start for the all-day session.
Some of the society's best and brightest - and other experts - will teach beginners. Other discussions will be offered for those who long ago gave in to the addiction that cannot be ignored.
At 9 a.m., Lois Phelps Thomason will present "The Right Start - Beginning Genealogy;" Shirley Penna-Oakes will teach "Pennsylvania - Regional Research;" and Wanda Hopkins and Debbie Bieck will discuss "German Research and Germans from Russia."
