Youth group plans volunteer project

Compiled by Jeannie E. Nordstrom

Youth For Christ has organized a community service project in which they're striving to give 2001 volunteer hours to painting, cleaning windows, visiting shut-in people, washing cars and more. The event, Youth Serve 2001, begins at 9 a.m. today.

YFC sponsors a network of youth groups from all over Kootenai County. Of those, about 25 teams of five to eight youth and adults have registered to help during Youth Serve 2001.

One of the biggest projects scheduled is at Coeur d'Alene City Park where the chain link fence will be replaced with a wooden fence. The Parks and Recreation Department had the materials for the job but not the manpower.

Customers at the Super One grocery stores in Post Falls and Rathdrum may get their cars washed for free. This is being done to show thanks to customers who support the grocers who have so willingly donated to church groups when asked. Absolutely no donations will be accepted at either location. Tom Richards, director of North Idaho Youth for Christ, said it's more important for people to donate their money to the victims of the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C.

Richards also said the real drive and vision for Youth Serve 2001 came from Garth Nickelson, youth pastor at Hayden Friends Church. Richards said the youth groups at the Friends church are very active in helping the community.

After the volunteer groups spend the day helping others, they'll meet at 3:30 p.m. at Q'emiln Park in Post Falls for a rally. Two Christian youth bands will perform, and a barbecue dinner will be served.

Church members wishing to brighten the holiday for the missionaries may take a tag, purchase a gift and return it by the date noted on the tag. The gifts will be sent or taken to the missionaries in time for Christmas. "Christmas in October" runs from Sunday through Oct. 21.

Also at CBC a Sunday evening Bible study on the book of Romans will begin this Sunday. The class will be taught by Pastor Jeff Gelnett at 6 p.m. at the fireside room at the church, 5350 N. Fourth St., Coeur d'Alene. For more information, call the church at (208) 664-4883.
