Lillian S. Anwyl

JOPLIN, Mo. -- Lillian S. Anwyl, 91, Joplin, Mo., died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at a Tulsa, Okla., hospital of injuries suffered in a July 23 traffic accident in Joplin.

She taught rural schools in Kansas and also worked as a bookkeeper, office manager and secretary. She owned and operated a taxi company in Parsons, Kan., during World War II. She also farmed with her husband, and she later worked as a professional secretary in California. She retired in 1972.

Mrs. Anwyl was born March 6, 1908, in Kansas, the daughter of James and Lizzie Creek Sawyer. She graduated from Sheldon High School, Sheldon, Mo., in 1926. She graduated from Los Angeles Mission College in 1984. She had lived in Parsons, Topeka and Whiting.

Mrs. Anwyl was a member of the Joplin Women's Club, the Joplin Welcome Club and the Grandslammers Bridge Group. She also had been active in the San Fernando Valley Chapter of the National Secretaries' Association and the Retired Secretaries organization.

She married John Anwyl on Oct. 31, 1948, in Horton. He died July 13, 1987. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharyl Jean, on Feb. 26, 1950.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Mason-Woodard Mortuary in Joplin. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Miller Cemetery, near Everest, Kan. Friends may visit from 10 a.m. until service time today at Mason-Woodard Mortuary. Friends also may visit from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Horton.

The family suggests memorials to the Ronald McDonald House Brick Fund or the Sheldon High School Scholarship Fund, sent in care of Mason-Woodard Mortuary, 3701 E. 7th, Joplin, Mo., 64801.
