ROSSVILLE -- A Rossville man died Tuesday evening when his farm tractor overturned on top of him in a field north of town, authorities said.
The man, whose name wasn't released, died from injuries he received in a field about five miles north of Rossville. Rossville Fire Department Chief Wilbur Stum Jr. said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rossville first-responders were notified of the accident at about 6:30 p.m., Stum said, but he didn't know how long the man, who was in his 80s, was underneath the tractor before rescue crews arrived.
The accident occurred in the 8800 block of N.W. Carlson Road. Rossville first-responders and Shawnee County sheriff's deputies arrived soon after the 911 call but quickly determined the man had died. Ambulance crews were called off en route.
The victim resided in Rossville but owned the property where the accident occurred, Stum said.
An official with the Shawnee County coroner's office was at the scene Tuesday evening investigating and photographing the accident, Stum said. The body was removed and taken to a Topeka mortuary later that night.
