British Energy prepares for Canadian power sale
Mike WoodcockBRITISH Energy is poised to decide the future of its prized asset Bruce Power this week.
With the November 29 deadline for the ending of the government's (pounds) 650 million emergency loan looming, the stricken East Kilbride-based power generator was locked in talks with regulators about the potential sale of the nuclear complex in Ontario, Canada.
British Energy, which supplies a fifth of the UK's power, issued a statement to the City on Friday saying that the proceeds from any sale - potentially raising between (pounds) 500m and (pounds) 1 billion if it sold its entire stake - would be used to repay the government.
Industry analysts believe the government could face substantial financial liabilities from buying out British Energy's energy trading agreements if it withdraws the loan.
Last night the power generator admitted to being "in discussions" about a sale.
