Tip of the week
Teresa HunterKeep a note of your motor insurance renewal date and start ringing round for quotations before you get your renewal notice. Some companies leave it as late as possible to send the notice out, hoping you will be too busy to shop around and will simply renew with them.
It always pays to see what other organisations will charge. Motor insurance is competitive and different companies assess risks differently, so a driver of your age or vehicle might do better elsewhere.
Other things you can do to reduce the bill are to restrict cover to named drivers only, or, in some cases, limit mileage. Young drivers are very expensive to add to your cover, so are best avoided where possible.
Additional security measures, such as garaging the car, can also bring down premiums. And finally, try getting married or changing your sex. Women and married people generally are favoured by many insurers, because they have fewer and less expensive accidents.
