White's batting leaves Surrey in Trophy fight
DAVID LLOYDSURREY were still fretting over 10 potentially crucial overs when they returned to Headingley for round two of their knockout match against Yorkshire.
Adam Hollioake's men looked favourites to win the C&G Trophy fourth round tie yesterday evening until the rain relented and England all-rounder Craig White put the contest back on a knife edge.
The fifth interruption of a shower-filled day came with Yorkshire on 82 for three in pursuit of a victory target of 244, Martin Bicknell having just won a fortunate looking
lbw verdict against Darren Lehmann.
Then, within a few minutes of the restart, 19-year-old seamer Tim Murtagh had Michael Lumb caught off a
miscued pull to leave the home side in trouble at 84 for four.
Surrey were not only winning the game on paper but they were also ahead on the Duckworth-Lewis system which is used to arrive at a result in the event of a total washout.
The final ten overs before
play was halted at 8pm, however, saw Yorkshire stage a spirited fightback.
White, who has struggled for runs this season since recovering from a side injury, took charge of a partnership with fellow all- rounder Gary Fellows that led the home team to 131 for four.
That left Yorkshire needing to score a further 113 runs from 21 overs to deny Surrey a home quarterfinal against Warwickshire.
In addition, White's unbeaten 29 was chiefly responsible for putting Yorkshire ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis target, a vital factor if rain prevented any more play today.
QUARTERFINAL DRAW: Yorkshire or Surrey v Warwicks; Kent v Somerset; Lancs or Sussex v Durham; Worcs v Notts or Leics.
Matches to be played on 24 or 25 July.
