RUGBY LEAGUE: STUART RAPS HIS BIG FLOPS
DAVID BURKEANGRY manager Stuart Raper has called his Wigan players in for special training this morning after their first defeat in 13 matches.
Raper, whose side missed the chance to jump into second place, slammed:"I'm very disappointed and we were outplayed by Hull.
"It was a big wake-up call and I've told the players I want them in for some extra training.
"We've probably blown the chance of finishing first or second with this defeat.
"It was the strongest side we've had out for a long time and perhaps some of the youngsters who have done well for us in recent weeks should be back in the starting line-up.
"We have to take a good look at ourselves after this show."
Hull's rising star Richard Horne confirmed his outstanding potential with a man of the match performance and a double strike in a rip-roaring contest.
Horne, 20, took over as the last line of defence when full- back Steve Prescott pulled out just before the kick off with a hamstring problem.
And it was Horne's solo try early in the second half which fired Hull ahead for the first time.
Then Horne crossed for his second touchdown two minutes from time to seal a famous win.
Hull were also inspired by Wigan old boys Chris Chester and Tony Smith, who has taken over as skipper with Jason Smith out for the rest of the season.
Horne made two try-saving tackles before Gareth Raynor hauled down Adrian Lam in full flow in a frantic finale.
Hull overcame a horror start to trail only 12-10 at the break, with Wigan's tries from Julian O'Neill and Andy Farrell, while Smith replied for Shaun McRae's men.
Wigan had won on their last six visits to the Boulevard but didn't deserve a win this time.
Crowther's seven goals from eight attempts proved crucial for Hull, who had Garreth Carvell yellow-carded in the 63rd minute.
Wigan took advantage for ex-Hull winger Brian Carney to go over in the corner, with O'Neill's touchline conversion cutting the gap to 20- 18 before Horne's late effort.
Horne admitted: "Our forwards laid the platform for the win.
"I didn't know I was playing full-back until two hours before the kick off but I'm happy in the position."
Hull manager Shaun McRae added:"We showed plenty of steel and grit, and it was a fantastic effort against the odds."
The home side had Richard Fletcher placed on report for a high tackle on Carney.
