Must see
Stephen PhelanSAHARA WITH MICHAEL PALIN Today, 7pm, BBC1 That itchy-footed wanderer Michael Palin rips off on one of his idiosyncratic jaunts between the remote outposts of the less civilised world with only the unlimited funding of the BBC for company. This time he's heads up the burning Sahara, marvelling at the sunsets, chatting to the locals, giving us histories and conflicts in soundbites, inspiring the usual mix of exotic interest and nagging jealousy with his dull quasi- colonial air.
99 THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU'RE THIRTY Today, 10.55pm, Channel 5 You've probably got your own wishlist, but this super-eager show has some new ideas for stupid ways to validate your youth. Four presenters engage in a variety of basically safe and absolutely legal challenges for kicks, from crashing a car on purpose (not as cool as it sounds) to playing in the World Air Guitar Championships. Personally, I fancy a bit of graverobbing and orgy-crashing before I hit the big three-o.
NATIONAL TELEVISION AWARDS Tuesday, 8pm, ITV This is one of those award ceremonies where the winners yap about how it means so much more to them because they're all voted for by the public. By which they mean "ha ha ha, suckered the proles again, dance, puppets, dance!" The nation (ITV's phone and internet poll voters) have chosen their favourite presenters, quiz shows and serial dramas, and tonight they will be glorified accordingly.
THE WORLD STUNT AWARDS Thursday, 10.35pm, Channel 5 Now this is more like it - an award ceremony where the categories include Best Fight, Best Stuntwoman and Best High Work, and the prize-giving is punctuated by a visit to renowned fall expert Bob Brown, who will crash through a plate glass window and fall 20 stories while on fire. Guests include Jackie Chan and James Gandolfini, plus a whole slew of stunt mad American pros.
LATER WITH JOOLS HOLLAND Friday, 12.15am, BBC2 It's the 20th series of Jools's eclectic muso jam sessions, no less. It's the same old bare-bones format, a little stuffy and humourless maybe, but still the best and simplest way to do a live music magazine on TV - just shut up and play. This week old dame Bowie will do a couple of new tracks (zzzzzz) and Rebel Rebel. Plus Mercury Prize lady Ms Dynamite and Scouse musical magpies The Coral. Nice.
