Anglers find bodies of two missing men

Dan Hansen Staff writer The Associated Press

Pacific Ocean fishermen recovered on Wednesday the bodies of two Eastern Washington men who have been missing since a boating accident last week.

The bodies were identified as Ryan Floch, 21, of Odessa, and James Starr, 19, of Spokane, said Clallam County Undersheriff Joe Martin.

The two were aboard a boat that the Coast Guard found wrecked near La Push, Wash., on Aug. 30.

Still missing from that accident is the Rev. Tom Starr, grandfather of the young men.

The body of another grandson, Andrew Floch, was recovered Monday. It was clad in a blue life jacket.

The bodies found Wednesday also wore blue life jackets.

"Today has been tough for the family," said Leslie Stevenson, close friend of Bill and Paula Starr, parents of James Starr. "You hold onto that little piece of hope that they may be cast away on a little island. ... This makes things final so it's very difficult."

The crew aboard the commercial fishing boat Tatoosh discovered one body about 9:30 a.m. and the other an hour later, said Coast Guard Lt. Mark Hiigel.

The Coast Guard recovered both bodies.

The bodies found Wednesday were 10 and 12 nautical miles south of Starr's wrecked boat. Floch's body was about 60 miles northeast of the wreckage.

"It's really turbulent out there," so it's not unusual for the bodies to drift in different directions, Hiigel said. "One can go north and the other south depending on the coastline and how the currents respond."

Friends are planning memorials for the four men, starting with one for James Starr at 7 p.m. Friday, at Berean Bible Church, 10910 E. Boone. Starr, a University High School graduate, was attending Spokane Falls Community College and was a summer church camp counselor.

A memorial for Tom Starr is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Valley Fourth Memorial Church, 2303 S. Bowdish. Church officials said the family wants the service to honor all four victims, not just Pastor Starr.

The Floch brothers will be memorialized Sunday at their alma mater, Odessa (Wash.) High School. The service, in the gymnasium at 311 S. First., is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Ryan Floch graduated from Big Bend Community College last year and was enrolled at Eastern Washington University. Andrew Floch attended Big Bend Community College last year.
