Football: HOT CURRIE

RICHARD CLARK

TONY ADAMS was bitten by the FA Cup bug once more as his new side strolled past Second Division rivals Swindon.

Adams, three times a winner of the famous trophy, was installed as Wycombe manager earlier in the week and got off to a winning start through goals from Andy Thomson, Jermaine McSporran and a Darren Currie double.

The former England stalwart left first-team duties in the hands of assistant John Gorman and took his place in the stands.

The first 30 minutes made uncomfortable watching, with his new charges failing to turn possession into chances, and when they did finally fashion an opportunity Currie shot wide from outside the area.

Keith Ryan was then offered a shooting chance but screwed his effort wide before he headed over from Currie's fine cross.

Swindon will consider themselves unlucky not to have scored from their first meaningful attack.

Brian Howard's fierce effort struck the post and Sam Parkin, following up, forced a brilliant reflex save from Frank Talia.

The deadlock was finally broken with a goal a minute before the interval.

Currie swung another corner in and Thomson, having strode up the pitch from defence, rose to plant a bullet header past Rhys Evans and into the net.

Adams came down to the dugout after the break to applause from the home crowd and was soon gesticulating wildly as Swindon piled on the pressure.

Wycombe were grateful to Talia for preserving their lead when Parkin found space to fire in a shot, and almost immediately the hosts doubled their lead. Stuart Roberts won a free-kick on the edge of the Swindon area and Currie curled the ball round the wall and past the despairing dive of Evans.

Swindon ensured a nervy finish for the new manager when they were awarded a penalty after Parkin tumbled under a challenge from Thomson. Skipper Andy Gurney stepped up to blast the ball past Talia.

But with Adams seeming to kick every ball himself, Currie put the game beyond the visitors with five minutes remaining, and McSporran ensured Adams' managerial debut ended with a flourish.
