Football: HORS AND CO. CANTER HOME

SIMON JOHNSON

WIGAN boss Paul Jewell blasted his side despite sending Wimbledon crashing to their sixth straight defeat and climbing to second in the league.

Jewell was furious with his players after they allowed Wimbledon back into the game after going three goals up inside 33 minutes.

Goals from Jimmy Bullard, Andy Liddell and pounds 1million debutant Geoff Horsfield looked to have secured the three points before half-time.

But Wimbledon rallied through Patrick Agyemang and Jobi McAnuff before Nathan Ellington put Wigan out of reach.

Jewell's side have now won four games in a row, but it wasn't enough to stop him giving them a rocket after the match.

He said: "At 3-0 up we should have won at a canter. If you knock off for a second in this league you get punished.

"We should have been keeping our concentration rather than blowing kisses and waving to the crowd.

"I've had a bit of a blast at them. The good thing is I've hardly ever get a corner kick here so I'm satisfied to get a win."

Geoff Horsfield terrorised the Dons on his first appearance since joining Wigan from Birmingham for pounds 1million.

Wimbledon, who had conceded 16 goals in their previous six games, had no answer to the experience of the former Premiership striker.

Horsfield had already looked to be combining well with partner Ellington when Bullard put the visitors in front on 21 minutes with a 28-yard shot.

The Dons were in complete disarray at the back and fell further behind just eight minutes later when Horsfield played in Liddell to fire home.

And Horsfield couldn't believe his luck on 33 minutes when he was gifted a goal when Bullard's corner caused panic in the home defence and he converted from six yards.

Wimbledon staged a fightback when, a minute later, Agyemang rounded keeper John Filan and slid the ball home. He the set up McAnuff three minutes after the break.

But Ellington secured the win when he headed Bullard's cross home for his fourth goal in four games. Wimbledon boss Stuart Murdoch said: "We conceded three very poor goals and we can't hide behind the fact we have young players."MAN OF THE MATCH JASON KOUMAS
