GARDENING: DIY IT; HOW TO PUT UP A FENCE
Adrienne WildeTHE fence is the most popular form of boundary, ahead of hedges and walls. It is cost-effective and can be put up in hours.
But before you start, check who owns the boundary. It is an unwritten rule that the person erecting the fence should have the back of it on their side.
You can put up a fence without planning permission as long as it is no more than 2m high. The most popular types of fence are those that slot into grooved concrete or wooden posts.
Before digging the holes for the posts mark out their location with a wooden peg.
A post should have one quarter of its length under ground. Once the post is in place, straighten it with a spirit level and ram some hardcore around the base. Then fill up the hole with a mix of one part cement, two parts water and three parts aggregate.
Tamp down the cement and allow to dry overnight before slotting in the fence panels.
Wooden posts can be pushed into metal spikes that are driven into the ground. The panels are then nailed to the posts.
