Tha procastinator's revenge: a career concept - aprender a vivir la vida con calma - TT: learning to live life calmly

Valentino B. Martinez

Here comes another "new year" and maybe an ambivalent feeling that there are so many things we'd like to do, get done, do better, catch-up on or, at least consider doing, relative to improving our career situation. STOP! Halt! Alto! Don't do it. Wait. Hold up. Chill. Stop the sanity. Yes, it all makes sense. This constant focus on improving ourselves and our lot in life. But just whoa for a moment.

I say, "take this new year deal down a notch." Calma te. Relax. Don't load yourself up with all this guilt about what you should have been doing for the last five years and should be doing to improve your current situation. That guilt is deadly and can be demeaning. You have enough on your plate, sorry, bad visual--to worry about.

Stop the sanity and run to your comfort zone. Give yourself a break. A rest. A siesta. Catch your breath and your composure. Stop the 24 hour infomercials. Politely tell Richard Simmons, Tony Robbins, Gloria DeAngelis, Steven Covey, and Deepak Chopra to give back the money. Quit paying for information your mother, father, grandmother, best friend(s), good teachers and great supervisors squared you away on over the years--not to mention where you worship. If you want to spend your hard earned money--send it to me and I tell you you're wasting your money and I'll send it back. Most of it.

Stop the sanity and procrastinate. Procrastination has its place in the human condition. It's a way of telling the world to p__ off. However long the feeling lasts--it's worth it. So kick-back. Assess the situation. What would your mother, father, favorite teacher, mentor, or respected manager, say to you, given your circumstances, at this moment? Plus what do you think? Make a note. Expand on it. Conceptualize a strategic approach. Do it. At the speed you're comfortable with. Don't kill yourself or anyone else in the process. Smile more. Hug more. Study more. Listen more. Even pray more--and don't look for short-cuts, quick fixes or instant anything. If you want fast food and fast weight gain, you can get it. Fast. But you can also burn it off by simply--working at it. Does misery love company? YES! But misery, in many respects, can be controlled and headed-off at the pass. If you want someone to take advantage of you when you are physically or psychologically down-they're ready, willing and able--for a fee.

Keep your money away from people who know what you want to hear, package it and sell it to you and your friends. Ever see where these people five? What they drive? Nice. You made their dreams come true. Yes, some few deserve it. Some earn it. Some help you find yourself and give you direction. Listen to Dr. Laura. Listen to yourself Hey! Remember Mother Teresa? Make your own dreams come true. Get some "procrastinator's revenge." P__ them off. Give your money to your momma or your place of worship. They have long plotted to assist you along the way. With your mother, what you heard in-between the cooing and screaming, was wisdom. Don't mess with momma and, if you're smart, don't p__ her off. Is this making sense? If not, call me. I can scream at you. Talk some sense into you. Pay me nothing.

Your career is important. Your life really matters. You will have an impact on many people. Make your impact have positive results. Stop the sanity. Procrastinate because it gives you breathing room. Thinking room. And an opportunity for revenge. So take your time. It's your time to take. Feel better already? Well, you're on your way. In my next article we'll talk about specific steps in developing a career plan. Until then, have a procrastination filled career.
