Seattle Chocolates hatches idea for Chick Chocolates

SEATTLE-Breaking away from its regionally based named and targeting national, specialty distribution, Seattle Chocolates introduced its Chick Chocolate line at the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York.

The chicks come in three personalities and in two configurations each. Three pieces of individually wrapped chocolates are packaged in a brightly colored, one-ounce box.

A two-piece flow wrapped package is also available. Each shipper comes with a foam board to stand the chicks.

* Extreme Chick is a solid, dark chocolate,

* Strong Chick is calcium-fortified chocolate and offers 60 percent of the recommended daily allowance of calcium, and

* Nutty Chick has chocolate with toffee and almonds.

The idea behind the line is to keep the chicks fresh and trendy, said Jean Thompson, chief executive officer. Other personalities are likely, and promotions announcing new arrivals might be "there's a new chick in town," Thompson said.

"The name Seattle Chocolates is a deterrent for us to get national distribution," said Thompson. "Regionally stamped brands" have little national appeal.

Besides the gift and specialty retail market, the chicks appeal to alternate channels such as nail salons and boutiques, she added.

This is the second brand launched without the Seattle Chocolates moniker.

In May, Seattle Chocolates launched its Skinny Truffles line, a melt-away truffle with a reduced-carbohydrate profile. The truffle is sweetened with maltitol, an all-natural sugar alcohol.

Available in three flavors-milk chocolate with almond, dark chocolate with espresso, and milk chocolate with mint-individually twist-wrapped Skinny Truffles are packaged in a 3.5-ounce, resealable bag. A two-piece, individually wrapped package is also available.

Founded in 1992, family-owned Seattle Chocolates specializes in the production of individually wrapped melt-away chocolate truffles and truffle bars using all-natural kosher chocolate from Europe.
