Shubie's breaks ground on double-sized store
Wolff, LisaMARBLEHEAD, Mass.-Shubie's Marketplace, Wines & Spirits, based here, broke ground in June on a 10,000-squarefoot gourmet retail store at 16 Atlantic Ave., here, to replace its 5,500-squarefoot, rented location at 32 Atlantic Ave. Construction will be completed by January 2005.
Owners George and Carol Shube have purchased the land on which they are constructing the two-story building, located north of Boston. The second floor will house a demo kitchen, gift basket assembly and storage area, and offices.
The family-owned gourmet retailer has been in business since 1948.
At the new store, Shubie's will increase its gift basket and catering services. In addition, on-premise seating for customers will be available. Upon moving into the new location, the Shubes will close their existing store.
The new store and location will feature an expanded assortment of prepared foods, imported cheeses, deli meats, pastries, specialty foods, gifts and fine wines.
"We do gifts now, but we are hoping to expand our kitchenware area," said Carol Shube. "We'll offer select items, such as the best salad spinner or cheese grater."
On the second floor, a large demo kitchen will be available for wine tastings, cooking classes and special events.
Final plans for the store's décor and feel were being worked out at press time, Shube said.
