Golf Digest was the first publication to rank golf courses-our biennial feature on Amer-ica's 100 Greatest Golf Courses dates to 1966. Now, for the first time, we've compiled course rankings for all the major golfing nations around the world, plus some minor ones, too-100 countries in all.

We feel it's meaningless to try to come up with a world ranking of golf courses-who can say if Hirono, for example, is better or worse than Paraparaumu, Ballybunion, Royal Durban, the Jockey Club or Mauna Kea? We prefer to compare like with like.

We contacted the editors of Golf Digest's 25 foreign-affiliated magazines and picked their brains. We talked to numerous other friends around the world. We consulted tourist boards; we leafed through guidebooks; we scoured dozens of Web sites. And after much discussion, we came up with our lists of the very best courses this planet has to offer.

If you've played some of these far-flung courses, let us know about it. We'd like to hear all about your exotic experiences abroad. And if you disagree with any of our country rankings, compile your own personal lists and send them to us, too.
