Senior man on the junior circuit - Steve Haskins - Brief Article
Mark StewartSteve Haskins, who was setting records as a teenager, has a new mark he's not particularly proud of-all-time leader in events played on the Hogan/Nike/Buy.com tours.
Haskins, 40, has played in 230 of those events and counting. "I've got a lot of experience-unfortunately, most of it isn't good," says the veteran from El Paso.
When he was 16, Haskins shot a course-record 64 at Lee Trevino's Santa Teresa course, but admits he hasn't fulfilled his early promise. He turned pro in 1984, and says he's made "at least 14 trips" to the PGA Tour Qualifying School, reaching the finals 11 times.
When the Hogan Tour was launched in 1990, Haskins earned $43,000, 14th on the money list, which would have earned him a tour card today. Then, only the top five got in.
After finishing 38th on the Nike Tour in 1999, he's struggled this year on the newly named Buy.com Tour, with four missed cuts and a WD. "It's a hard way to make an easy living," he says.
