Justin's Smart Golf : Choosing the right ball position - Brief Article
Justin LeonardLet conditions dictate changes
I start with some basic "default" ball positions-just inside my left heel for the driver, two inches ahead of center for a middle iron, and center or just back of center for a short iron.
But I change these positions, along with how far apart I set my feet, for almost every shot. With a 5-iron, I'll play the ball anywhere from my left heel, if I've got to hit a cut or get it up in the air, to my right heel if I'm trying to keep the shot down.
I'll move the ball less for shots with my driver and short irons-maybe five inches in either direction. My stance also gets wider when I want to hit it lower.
For consistency, start with set ball positions and stance widths, but don't be afraid to make some adjustments to change your shot flights.
