Watson's Shortcuts : How to test-drive a driver - Brief Article
Tom WatsonI've been experimenting in practice with longer-shafted drivers. So far I haven't been able to square the face consistently. If you're thinking about changing drivers, here are a few thoughts.
Slower swings need more loft
In trying out drivers, realize that the slower your swing, the more loft you must have to get the ball airborne. Start with trying to find the loft that's right for you, along with the correct shaft flex and length.
Try drivers with more loft first, and work toward less loft.
Try weaker shafts first, then work toward stronger shafts.
Try shorter shafts first, then go to longer.
Don't wear yourself out hitting too many balls. Hit four or five shots with each driver, and weed out the ones you don't like. Take a break, then hit a few more balls with each of your finalists. If you have the luxury, hit the finalists on another day, when you're fresh.
Now you're ready to put your cash on the line.
