Watson's Shortcuts : Find the slot at the top for solid shots - golfer Tom Watson - Brief Article
Tom WatsonSet your thumbs under the shaft Here's a simple three-step technique for finding the proper position at the top:
* Take a good grip and address posture. (Probably 95 percent of you don't pay enough attention to these preswing basics.)
* Place the club on your right shoulder (if you're right-handed), parallel to the ground.
* While maintaining your spine angle from address, turn your shoulders and extend your left arm until it's straight or nearly straight.
Your club and hands will now be in good position at the top, your thumbs supporting the shaft.
You can practice this position indoors. When you're at the range, repeat this process several times from your address position, then try to reach the same good position with a normal backswing.
