What's in my bag? - Brief Article

Tom Watson

I played forged blade irons my entire life on tour. When I first hit the Tight Lies GT Tour cast cavity-back irons from Adams I liked them right away because the mis-hits were better, especially off the toe. I played the new clubheads with my old steel shafts all last year, and then switched to Adams' new graphite-tipped steel shafts just before the senior tour championship. I won that event, so obviously I'm excited about playing these new innovations.

Woods

My Tight Lies ST driver (8 degrees) and Tour 3-wood (13 degrees) have the BiMatrx graphite shaft with a steel tip. The graphite keeps the weight down and the steel tip reduces torque, making it easier to square the clubface. My GT i-wood (18 degrees) has the graphite-tipped steel shaft.

Irons

Good players use steel shafts in their irons for distance control; the graphite tips on my iron shafts reduce vibration. These shafts, in combination with the heads, improve the feel at impact.

Putter

This Ping Pal is the backup of the Pal I started using in 1978 and won many tournaments with (the original was stolen). Putters have been in and out of my bag the most over the years, but this model's doing me justice once again.

Wedges

I'm proud of the Tom Watson GT Wedges that I helped design. We shaped the sand wedge to my specs: 10 degrees bounce, 63-degree lie angle and 56 degrees loft. Since my pitching wedge is 47 degrees, I'm thinking of adding a 52-degree gap wedge.
