Bad fall has mother of two in financial bind

Debbie fell out of a third-story window in January, breaking her back.

Since then, she's been in a body brace, which covers her chest and back, and has been unable to work, she said.

"I guess the hardest thing is not being financially able to provide monthly," said Debbie, not her real name. "I'm scraping and scratching."

She said the metal rods and screws in her back will likely be taken out the middle of next year.

The 33-year-old mother of two turned to Northern Churches Care, one of 11 organizations that benefit from The Gazette-El Pomar Empty Stocking Fund.

"They helped me with utilities, food and clothing," she said.

"They've given me referrals to other places for emergency food. Everything, really. They helped assist me with rent."

Debbie's husband left in March, she said. She's engaged now and her sister-in-law helps with her 2-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter.

Debbie is a little worried about providing Christmas for her kids.

"They understand that Christmas is not about just toys," she said.

"I mean it's hard on them because everything they see on TV they want. We'll probably be able to get two toys and maybe an outfit."
