Pine Creek boys get doubled up by much taller Chaparral

The visiting Class 5A Chaparral (3-0) boys basketball team doubled host Pine Creek 86-43 Saturday night.

Pine Creek (2-1) stayed close to the visitors through most of the first quarter before the taller and more experienced team from Parker pulled away to a 44-27 halftime lead.

Chaparral outscored Pine Creek 42-16 in the second half.

"I thought we did a good job staying close to them in the first quarter," said Pine Creek coach Dick Castle.

"They just ran the floor too well for us to keep up. That and the fact we couldn't handle their pressure defense after the first quarter."

When Chaparral wasn't stealing the ball in the backcourt, it was making full-court passes and smart passes inside for easy baskets.

Chaparral had 16 points on free throws to five for Pine Creek in the first half.

Chaparral was led by 20 points by juniors Zachary Tomashosky and Dan Snedaker. Pine Creek's leading scorers were sophomores Joe Hermann, with 12 points, and Tom Probert with 11.

"We had hoped to have a veteran team this year," Castle said.

"However, we had a couple of our players move and some were hurt in football. So this is a very young team and they are still learning."

Chaparral played in a 4A league with Pine Creek last year before moving to 5A.

"I thought the transition from 4A to 5A has been very good for us," said Chaparral coach Jason Jacob. "We've been very competitive. We get the ball upcourt very well and our defense is pretty aggressive. I thought those were keys to the game tonight."

Pine Creek will play in the Pueblo West tourney Thursday through Saturday.
