AFA's aim is off in another loss/ Texas A&M-Corpus Christi knocks

An ice-cold shooting performance in the first half cost the Air Force women's basketball team on Thursday night in a 68-42 home loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The Falcons (2-8) didn't score a field goal during a 15-minute stretch to close the opening half at Clune Arena.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which struggled early as well, eventually blew the game open late in the first half with its full- court pressure.

"We needed to be more aggressive defensively and force some things with our defense," Islanders coach Sheryl Estes said. "Our defense got it going. We got some turnovers and scored off those turnovers. Early on, our offense was stagnant."

It was the sixth straight defeat for Air Force as it heads to Philadelphia to face Penn on Saturday and to Annapolis, Md., on Tuesday to face Navy.

Early on against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Air Force clicked. A pair of 3-pointers by Rozalyn Russ and ShaNekia Peebles helped put Air Force ahead 10-5 with 14:11 left in the first half.

The Falcons then went cold from the field, but had some chances from the free-throw line.

Unfortunately, Air Force made just 9-of-16 free throws in the opening half to go along with its dismal 4-of-16 shooting effort from the field.

"It was unfortunate, we came out and we hit some good shots and we were right in the game," said Air Force coach Sue Darling. "They pressed us and zoned us. We weren't hitting our shots, but we were getting to the free-throw line. So we had a chance to close the deficit with the clock stopped, unfortunately we ended up 16-of-30 from the line. If we could have made those we could have closed that gap.

"Still, I thought the kids did a great job with their poise and confidence under pressure once they kind of got used to it. This team doesn't have one star player. We have to play team offense and team defense. That's our strength and that's what we have to do."

Russ led the Falcons with 13 points, while Jessie Monlux of Gillette, Wyo., paced Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with 17.

Monlux, a junior-college transfer, nailed 5-of-7 3-pointers for her season-high scoring performance. Air Force made just 2-of-14 from 3-point range.
