Hank Kuehne: the secret I'm searching for? How to keep my drives on the planet

Scott Smith

I've been working hard for more than two years with my instructor, Kevin Smeltz of the David Leadbetter Golf Academy, to improve my technique so I can get rid of the really wild shots I sometimes hit. I'm leading the tour in driving distance, at 315 yards, but I'm 181st in driving accuracy. Everybody's giving me grief for that second stat.

The most important thing for me is to match my clubhead speed to my body speed. Both are very fast. I've always hit it far, and I've always put about 85 percent of my drives in play. But out here on tour you can't be out of play at all. Make pars and you get passed by.

Shaft and clubhead technology have also come a long way in terms of optimizing power according to your swing type. As you'll see on the following pages, TaylorMade uses 3-D motion-analysis technology that allows me to check my body and club positions from any angle, with precise measurements of everything from center of gravity to clubhead velocity. I'll always be a feel player, but if technology can make me more efficient, you can bet I'll try it.
