perry -- Amateur Radio Field Day to be at Lake Perry -- The 1999 Amateur Radio Field Day, sponsored by the Best Amateur Radio Club

From noon today to 10 a.m. Sunday participants will operate their radio equipment as a practice for emergency communications. The ham radios will be on day and night to contact other radio operators around the world. Visitors are welcome.

To get to the field day site, take US-24 highway to county road 237, which is east of Grantville; take 237 north 3.3 miles and turn east. Proceed 2.7 miles on the black top, following the signs that say "ARRL Field Day." Turn north to the shelter house where the equipment is set up. Governor reappoints Topekan to Kansas Arts Commission -- Topekan John Hunter was reappointed to the Kansas Arts Commission on Friday by Gov. Bill Graves. The governor also appointed T.J. Snyder, of Mission Hills, and Kent Stehlik, of Dodge City, to the commission. All three will serve four-year terms expiring in June 2003. The 12-member commission is responsible for the development and coordination of arts within the state. The commission also oversees the coordination and promotion of Kansas art on a national level. Lawrence -- Embezzler gets 41 months without parole -- A man who embezzled nearly $390,000 from his employer and forced the company to close has been sentenced to 41 months in prison without parole. Randall Asbury, 45, cheated Kornbrust Pole Line Builders Inc. by issuing business checks to false corporations he created, federal prosecutors said. Asbury, who was hired to manage the company's books, also charged personal expenses to company credit cards and diverted checks written to Kornbrust to bank accounts he controlled. He bought electronics, appliances, antiques and collectibles for his own use, prosecutors said. The scheme forced Kornbrust to liquidate its assets to pay off creditors. Asbury pleaded guilty in April to two counts of attempting to evade his 1994 and 1995 federal income taxes. He failed to report the embezzled money, prosecutors said.
