Late goals bruise Wayne
Troy SchwindtAir Force rallied in the third period for a 2-1 victory over Wayne State on Saturday night at the Cadet Ice Arena.
The Falcons, who settled for 1-1 tie in Friday's contest, jumped a point ahead of Wayne State and into third place in the CHA standings with six league games remaining before the league tournament.
Air Force scored two goals within 39 seconds midway through the third period to overtake Wayne State.
"It doesn't come any bigger than that," Air Force coach Frank Serratore said. "I was very disappointed in our play, we were reacting to them in the first two periods.
"I challenged them big time after the second period and challenged them pretty vocally. Give them credit. At this time of year, it doesn't matter if you win pretty or win ugly. A win is a win and it doesn't come any bigger than that. It keeps us in the hunt."
The Falcons trailed 1-0 and had squandered eight straight power- play chances before their two-goal flurry. To make matters worse, Air Force's Andy Berg was called for a 10-minute misconduct penalty about the same time.
"Give our kids credit, they didn't quit," Serratore said. "We took some needless penalties. I think much of that was frustration, one goal in five periods. I don't like the way we responded to that, but we made a bad situation into a good one."
Air Force, (13-10-3 and 5-5-3) tied the game at 8:59 of the third period. Wayne State (14-11-2 and 6-6-2) attempted to clear the puck, but the Falcons' Scott Bradley intercepted it and fed Jace Anders at the point. Anders fired a shot that deflected in off of Brian Gornick's skate.
Thirty-nine seconds later, Air Force's Kyle Fransdal fired a shot that trickled off Wayne State goaltender David Guerrera's glove and into the net.
In two games, Guerrera made 61 saves and only allowed three goals. Air Force's Marc Kielkucki stopped 58 shots and allowed two goals.
Serratore said: "I think both of those goaltenders should be named defensive player of the week in the conference."
