Pettyjohn quiets Sky Sox bats during stormy night

DANNY SUMMERS THE GAZETTE

A tornado warning, golf ballsize hail, a thunderstorm and an 87- minute delay Tuesday didn't help the Sky Sox in their attempt to win Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Sacramento River Cats.

Colorado Springs lost 5-1 to the Pacific Coast League's Southern Division leaders as Adam Pettyjohn pitched a complete-game six hitter in front of 3,391 at Sky Sox Stadium.

The Sky Sox won Game 2 12-5. The game ended at 12:27 a.m. this morning.

In Game 1, the Sky Sox -- who entered play as the PCL's top- hitting team at .304 -- were held scoreless until one out in the seventh inning when Rene Reyes belted his sixth home run over the rightfield fence.

Pettyjohn had his best start in five outings for Sacramento since being acquired from the San Francisco Giants for cash on July 19. He threw 95 pitches (61 strikes), striking out seven with no walks.

"My last three starts were not very good," Pettyjohn said. "But I never stopped working on getting things back on track. I worked with (Sacramento) pitching coach Rick Rodriguez on location more than what I was throwing. Tonight I was trying to keep the ball down."

With the Sky Sox trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, home plate umpire Brian Knight halted play when he received word of a tornado warning in El Paso County.

When play resumed, Pettyjohn picked up where he left off. Sky Sox starter Alex Herrera did not come back after the delay. Herrera took the loss, allowing three runs on nine hits in five innings.

Extra bases

When Sky Sox catcher J.D. Closser was promoted to the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday after Todd Greene was placed on the disabled list, Hector Ortiz became the only regular catcher on the Sky Sox roster. Ortiz caught Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader, but didn't start the nightcap. Utility player Chris Donnels was the starting catcher in Game 2. Donnels last caught in a game on May 29, 2000, for the Albuquerque Dukes.
