Christina Faith Karsen completes boot camp

Christina Faith Karsen recently graduated from the Army National Guard boot camp at Fort Jackson, S.C. She is stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., where she is training as a transportation specialist.

Karsen is a 1997 graduate of Rogers High School.

Edward Gruber, a clinical professor and graduate program coordinator at the Intercollegiate College of Nursing/Washington State University, has been elected to serve as vice president/ president-elect for the American College of Nurse Practitioners. Gruber was elected by the membership to serve a three-year term.

Gruber has been an active member of the ACNP since 1995, serving as immediate past chair of the ad-hoc committee on state affiliate membership.

He also regularly provides direct care at the college's nurse- managed People's Clinic located at the YWCA and the Pediatric Outreach Project clinics held every Thursday at Shaw Middle School.

The YWCA has named the recipients of its annual Women of Achievement Awards.

Heather Buster and Juliana Reeves received a Women of Achievement Award in the student category.

Buster is a student at Spokane Community College. She currently serves as the Associated Student Council vice president of emergency services and oversees the operation of the campus food bank.

Reeves attends Eastern Washington University and is currently completing a double major in anthropology and chemistry. She has volunteered to tutor and counsel other students.

Dr. Jane Rinehart received a Women of Achievement Award in the faculty/staff category.

Rinehart is a professor of sociology and women's studies at Gonzaga University. Rinehart has demonstrated effective leadership among colleagues. The development of the women's studies program at Gonzaga University is largely due to Rinehart's efforts and leadership.

Mary Helen Flaherty received the Women of Achievement Award in the business category. Flaherty is the founder of Kids newspaper. It serves the purpose of acquainting parents with the people and programs of the public and private schools. A monthly tabloid is distributed throughout the community.

Rory-Anne Cudney received the Women of Achievement Award in the community category. Cudney helped found the Mead Community Service Food Bank.
