Volunteers honored by Shriners Hospital
Compiled by Cheri Robel.Maxine Nelson has been named Shriners Hospital for Children- Spokane volunteer of the year for the year 2000. A volunteer in the Outpatient Clinic, Nelson has logged more than 2,800 hours since she began volunteering at the hospital in 1992. Nelson also volunteers in Oregon and California, where she gathers stuffed toys for the outpatient clinic.
Tom Rousseau of Rousseau Insurance Agency was honored with an Award of Merit for his outstanding volunteer work to Shriners Hospital for Children-Spokane. Rousseau has provided professional photography at no cost for the hospital for more than 28 years. He also serves as the Imperial Chairman of Photography for the Shrine of North America.
Christa Thaxton of Spokane has been elected president of Delta Delta Delta sorority at Washington State University. She received the chapter's Sarah Ida Shaw Founder's Award for 2001 based on leadership and values. She also received a $400 scholarship from the Spokane Panhellenic Alumnae.
Thaxton is the daughter of Ron and Carole Thaxton, Spokane, and is a 1998 graduate of Shadle Park High School.
The following incoming freshmen have been awarded $1,000 president's scholarships for the 2001-02 academic year at Western Washington University. President's scholarships are awarded to more than 10 percent of applicants based on superior academic ability:
Elyse Penick, daughter of Ralph and Lois Penick, Spokane, is a senior at Shadle Park High School with a 4. grade-point average.
Erika Gunderson, daughter of Brian and Sue Gunderson, Spokane, is a senior at University High School with a 3.94 g.p.a.
Eric Scranton, son of Steve and Maxine Scranton, Spokane, is a senior at Ferris High School and has a 3.88 g.p.a.
Alyssa Hansen, was awarded a $500 president's scholarship for the 2001-02 academic year at Western Washington University. She is a senior at Mead High School with a 3.95 g.p.a. She is the daughter of Tom and Kathy Hansen, Spokane.
Arthur C. Smalley, Assistant Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 50 in Mead recently received the Bronze Pelican Award. Smalley was presented the award by Bishop William S. Skylstad on Scout Sunday at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. The Bronze Pelican is an adult religious award for Scout leaders who give Scout training and promote religious emblems.
