Area students awarded WWU scholarships
Compiled by Cheri RobelThe following Inland Northwest high school students have been awarded a $1,000 Presidents Scholarship for the 2001-2002 academic year at Western Washington University. The scholarships are awarded based on superior academic ability.
Eric Scranton, son of Steve and Maxine Scranton, Spokane, is a senior at Joel E. Ferris High school; Elyse Penick, daughter of Ralph and Lois Penick, Spokane, is a senior at Shadle Park High School; Erika Gunderson is a senior at University High School; Alyssa Hansen, daughter of Tom and Kathy Hansen, Spokane, is a senior at Mead High School.
Seiji Franklin, a 12th-grade student at the Washington School for the Deaf, was among five students who recently accompanied Superintendent Leonard Aron to Olympia to address the House Capital Budget Committee on the Campus Master Plan. Each student stood before the committee and, using sign language, introduced themselves and discussed their experiences at the Washington School for the Deaf.
Katie Tasca was named Central Valley School's top honoree in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Kelly Melter and Aaron Harrison received certificates of merit for their volunteer community service.
Tasca was honored for her achievements in organizing and implementing the Future Business Leaders of America Community Service Project of Read Across America.
Melter was recognized for her participation as a volunteer at a local hospital.
Harrison received his certificate for volunteer work as a classroom helper at an elementary school.
Chris topher Colgrove-Connery, a member of Boy Scout Troop 932, earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
Colgrove-Connery, son of Milton and Charmaine Connery, Post Falls, is a 10th grade student at Post Falls High School. His other honors include the Faith in God, On My Honor and Arrow of Light awards and was the 1999 World Youth Cribbage Champion. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow, a senior patrol leader and is an honors student.
Silas Hilliard and Mollie Ann Chapman have been named among the more than 2,600 candidates for the 2001 Presidential Scholars Program.
Hilliard, son of Dan and Kathy Hilliard, is a senior at Lewis and Clark High School.
Chapman is the daughter of John Chapman and Anita Hornback. She is a senior at Pullman High School.
Jaime Langton was selected to represent Central Valley High School as Lilac Festival Princess and was the recipient of a $1,000 Advanced Mechanical Scholarship.
Langton is the daughter of David and Diana Langton, Spokane, and plans to attend Eastern Washington University this fall in the Premedical program.
