Area graduates advance military careers
Compiled by Cheri RobelAir Force Airman Joshua L. Baker graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.
Baker is the son of Maria Baker and Jeff Baker, Spokane, and is a 1999 graduate of Mead High School.
United States Air Force 2nd Lt. Richard A. Gockley recently graduated from the Joint Services Strike/Fighter Navigator School at NAS Pensacola, Fla.
Gockley is is the son of Mike and Sonja Gockley, Spokane. He is a 1991 graduate of Mead High School and a 1996 graduate of Eastern Washington University.
Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Joel H. Preuninger has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.
Preuninger is the son of Bruce and Susan Preuninger, Spokane, and is a 1998 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.
Lucas Elton Stone has advanced to the rank of E-2 Fireman Apprentice upon his recent Naval graduation. He will attend Machinist Mate School at Great Lakes Naval Technical Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.
Sgt. First Class Robin P. Aguilar recently received the Army Commendation Medal for exemplary service.
Aguilar is a 1982 graduate of Shadle Park High School and is the son of Manuel and Kathryn Aguilar, Spokane.
Nathan Harris was awarded a $2,500 Academic Honors Scholarship for the 2000-2001 school year at Eastern Washington University.
Harris is the son of Kevin and Ginger Harris, Spokane, and is a 1999 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School. He is currently a sophomore in the pre-pharmacy program and the vice president of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, EWU chapter.
Tina Dlouhy, Spokane, recently graduated from Creighton University with a bachelor of science degree in nursing.
Erin Weir, Greenacres, has been awarded the Jeld-Wen Foundation Scholarship totaling $2,000 for the 2000-01 academic year.
Weir is a freshman at Gonzaga University majoring in pre-biology.
Jason Miller has been awarded a $4,500 academic tuition scholarship, renewable for four years, from the University of Idaho.
Miller is the son of Cary and Cindy Miller, Cheney, and a 1999 graduate of Cheney High School. He is a sophomore and is majoring in visual communication.
Gonzaga University captured first- and third-place honors in the Invitational Mock Trial Competition held in January at the Gonzaga University School of Law. Gonzaga and Eastern Washington University hosted the event.
Gonzaga's team of Megan Bachini (witness), Emily Bassier, Kelly Drew, Elizabeth Hanley, John Mascardo, Annie Swatzell and Geana VanDessel (captain) captured first place with a 6-0 record.
EWU's team of Amber Lewis, Teri Prayer, Andrea Cook, Noel Pitner, Lance Chase, Nicholas Jones, Christopher Wyrobek, and Nicholas Gamache finished second with a 5-0-1 record.
Gonzaga's team of Brad Crockett, Erin Dyer (captain), Ken Dusterdick, Jessica Glidewell, Mike Kapaun (witness), Claudia Islas (witness), James Person and Gretchen Verhoef placed third with a 4-1- 1 record.
These totals were based on three full rounds of competition. The competition involved 64 students from Gonzaga, EWU, Lewis-Clark State College and the University of Portland. The teams are coached by Gonzaga sociology/criminal justice Assistant Professor Georgie Ann Weatherby, and Gonzaga Law School alumni Pat Fannin, Bill Gilbert and Jeff Trull.
