Doctor tells of rescue on `PrimeTime'

Joel Brown New York Times Syndicate

Regular readers know this column seldom recommends magazine shows, except for the "60 Minutes" franchises. Too much drivel and sensationalism.

But tonight at 10 on ABC, Diane Sawyer offers a "PrimeTime Thursday" installment that should be riveting.

Dr. Jerri Nielsen was icebound at the South Pole, providing medical care for the small scientific colony there, when she made an awful diagnosis on herself: She had breast cancer. It was March 1999, and she knew she could not be evacuated for several months because of the extreme cold and endless darkness. So she treated herself, with long-distance coaching.

Nielsen has been surprisingly dignified about her story, allowing only limited public exposure - and more power to her on that score. But now she talks with Sawyer and shares video of her ordeal.

Highlights

"Whose Line Is It Anyway?" ABC at 8: Back-to-back repeat episodes of the improv comedy show hosted by Drew Carey.

"Mad City," CBS at 8: Dustin Hoffman is the exploitative reporter, and John Travolta is the fired security guard who takes a group of children hostage. The movie wants badly to say something meaningful about our media age, but "The Big Carnival" it isn't.

"The Net," FOX at 8: Sandra Bullock in a lame 1995 computer thriller.

"Friends," NBC at 8: The episode in which Rachel debates hiring a hunky but unqualified assistant. Repeat.

"WWF Smackdown," UPN at 8: Pro-wrestling extravaganza.

"The Weber Show," NBC at 8:30: Everything about this show says "ugh," including tonight's plot. Jack finds out that his new lesbian friend (guest Paula Marshall) might be straight after all and sets about wooing her.

Did we mention "ugh"?

"Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," ABC at 9.

"Will & Grace," NBC at 9: Dying on stage, Jack unveils a few of Will's secrets to put some life into his new cabaret act. Repeat.

"Mystery!" KSPS at 8: Part 2 of the latest "Touching Evil" installment, with Creegan (Robson Green in a terrific performance) unwrapping the rituals of a serial killer.
