Goodall, Krantz to head revamped REGI under Family banner - Jack Goodall, Barry Krantz, Restaurant Enterprises Group, Family Restaurants Inc - Brief Article

Richard Martin

IRVINE, Calif.--After acquiring Chi-Chi's and adopting the new Family Restaurants Inc. name in a pending bankruptcy reorganization, a recapitalized Restaurant Enterprises Group Inc. would retain some members of its current front-office team, the Irvine-based chain conglomerate disclosed this month.

Jack Goodall, chairman and chief executive officer of Foodmaker Inc., which will sell Chi-Chi's to REGI in exchange for cash and about 40 percent equity in Family Restaurants Inc., would also be the new company's chairman and chief executive officer.

Neither REGI's current chairman, J.P. Bolduc, who is president and CEO of W.R. Grace & Co., REGI's principal creditor, nor REGI's current president and CEO, Norman Habermann, would continue with the new FRI organization.

But Barry Krantz, who was named REGI's chief operations officer this year after a successful tenure as the company's family division president, will continue as chief operating officer.

Reporting to Krantz will be Kevin Relyea, now regional vice president of Foodmaker's Jack in the Box division, who will assume Krantz's duties as president of the 350-unit family chain division, principally comprising Coco's and Carrows. Relyea will also become an executive vice president of FRI.

Also reporting to Krantz and gaining an executive VP title will be Joe Micatrotto, currently president of Louisville, Ky.-based Chi-Chi's, who will preside over FRI's 315-unit Mexican restaurant division, comprising Chi-Chi's, E, Torito and Casa Gallardo. Don McComas, currently El Torito division president, will not stay on after the scheduled completion of REGI's Chapter 11 reorganization early next year.

Neither will Ken Harris, now divisional president of all REGI dinner houses, nor Jim Moore, who is scheduled to depart Dec. 1 from his post as president of REGI's Far West Concepts, comprising 42 Reuben's and Charley Brown's units.

However, REGI veterans Mike Casey and Patti Johnson will remain with the company after its transformation to Family Restaurants Inc. Casey will retain the post of chief financial officer, while Johnson, currently vice president of operations support services, will become FRI's chief administrative officer.
