United States and Mexico sign air-monitoring agreement
The United States and Mexico have announced joint efforts to improve air and water quality along their shared border, according to a press release issued June 24 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
As part of the Border 2012 program, the nations signed an air- monitoring agreement and the EPA committed $13 million toward the cleanup of a wastewater treatment plant in Mexicali, Mexico.
The 2012 Border Program focuses on six goals: cleaner air, cleaner water, cleaner land, improved environmental health, improved emergency response, and improved planning and environmental stewardship, the EPA said.
To date, the EPA said, it has contributed approximately $475 million to over 50 water and wastewater projects along the U.S.- Mexico border, providing access to potable water and sanitary treatment systems for some 6.5 million border-area residents.
