The Dow Jones U.S. Telecommunications Index finished down on Wednesday, closing at 98.02, a 0.89 percent decrease since Tuesday.
The Dow and Nasdaq both finished in negative territory Wednesday, driven downward by disappointing profit news from financial giant J.P. Morgan Chase [JPM] and bellwether Oracle [ORCL].
In the telecom sector, BT Group plc [BTY] gained 35 cents to close at $30.20 while Alltel [AT] dropped 60 cents to finish at $43.86.
On the telecom equipment side, Siemens AG [SI] dropped $1.24 to close at $38.46 while Lucent Technologies [LU] lost 6 percent to finish at 94 cents.
In the satellite sector, Lockheed Martin Corp. [LMT] gained $1.17 to close at $65.19 while PanAmSat Corp. [SPOT] increased 28 cents to finish at $17.88.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished down 35.10 points, or 0.43 percent, to 8,172.45. The Nasdaq decreased 7.81 points, or 0.62 percent, to finish at 1,252.13.
